Your details normally appear on the Dark Web due to data breaches or
criminal activity such
as hacking or phishing. It would be unusual for a company to sell or pass your details on if
they are a legitimate business, as there are Data Protection rules in most countries to stop
data being misused like this.
Unfortunately, Data Breaches are becoming more common as criminals target companies,
spending months on some occasions, breaching their fire walls to steal their data. It is not
always evident to a business that a Data Breach even has occurred and could be several
months before the breach is found. In 2019, 3,800 data breaches were declared world wide
(souce: Norton). This was a 54% increase on the year before.
In 2015 UK telecommunications company Talk Talk had a data breach, with 157,000 customer
records, in which 16,600 bank account numbers and sort codes were stolen. It was
subsequently established that individual personal information obtained during the breach was
for sale on the Dark Web for £1.62 per person. One person targeted by the Fraudsters of this
breach, lost over £20,000.
